Tips For Preparing For Carpet Installation

If you are having a new carpet installed, you probably want the process to go as quickly and smoothly as possible. You don't want to deal with the work of the installation process and just want to skip right to having beautiful new carpet. Here are some tips for making that happen.

1. Empty All Furniture

Go through the rooms that are going to be affected by the installation and make sure that you remove anything that might be on the furniture. This is going to make the jobs of the people who are installing the furniture much easier because they won't have to worry about removing these objects themselves and you don't have to worry about those objects being broken. This goes for anything that might be in hutches or on bookshelves. Move them out the way.

If you have a waterbed in the room where you are going to have carpet installed, make sure that you drain it well ahead of time in order to ensure that it won't be too heavy for the carpet installers to maneuver around. Also be sure that you empty any aquariums and move them out of the affected rooms.

2. Seal the Rooms

Carpet installation creates some of the same types of dust that regular construction work does. If you want to be sure that you are going to be successful at keeping the rest of your house clean, try to isolate the affected rooms ahead of time. This means having sheets of plastic over doorways in order to cordon off the areas and keep the dust in one place. Hang the plastic using painter's tape so that you can avoid accidentally damaging wallpaper or painted walls.

3. Resize Your Doors Ahead of Time

Finally, if possible, resize your doors ahead of time. If you are going from a bare floor to a luxurious shag carpet, your door might be too long and won't fit in the frame anymore. Use a sample of the carpet that you're going to have installed to check the height difference of going from bare floors to carpeting. Then, have someone come into your house and shave off that difference from your door. Having a professional do this will help you feel confident that your door is going to continue looking great. This will allow your door to be immediately rehung after the carpet has been installed.
